インテリジェント・キーボード

米国のインテリジェント・ペリフェラル・デバイス(IPD/Intelligent Peripheral Devices )社が開発した、電池で動く独立したキーボードの名称。商品名はアルファスマート(AlphaSmart)という。キーボードにメモリがあり、キーストロークを保存して、パソコンに接続するとメモリからキーストロークのデータを転送して入力するので、パソコンが無くてもキーボードだけで使用できる。以前、Commodore International社製のAmigaのシリーズにキーボードにパソコン機能を搭載した機種が販売されていたが、インテリジェント・キーボードはパソコンまで大がかりではなく、メモリだけを搭載し、Macintoshに接続すればMacデータが入力でき、Windowsマシンに接続すれば、Windowsデータとして入力できる。ただし、基本的にワープロとして文字入力作業が中心になる。学校などでパソコンを使い始めるときに、キー入力の練習用として開発された。詳細情報はURL(http://www.alphasmart.com/)で知ることができる。イギリス人はときどき不思議な調査をする。例えばAOL UKでは、キーボードの隙間に落ちていたゴミの分析を実施し、その56%はビスケットやチョコレートの食べかすで、口に出すのもおぞましい、または恥ずかしいものまで発見されたと言うことである。調査のきっかけは、AOL UKでドミノ・ピザの注文が可能になったことから、何かを食べながらキーボードを操作する人が多いのではないかと言うことで調べ始めたという。それでは、キーボード操作をしながら口に出すのもおぞましく、恥ずかしいことをしている人がいたことになりそうである。詳細情報はURL(http://www.zdnet.co.jp/news/0009/18/dirtypc.html)で知ることができる。キーボードに関しては、入力が面倒である、覚えるのが大変である、身体障害者には使えないなど多くの問題があり、キーボード拒絶症の人まで登場し、1991年にはカナダでElementary Keyboarding Guideについて多くの話し合いが行われた。1991年のElementary Keyboarding GuideについてはURL(http://www.sasked.gov.sk.ca/docs/elemkey/index.html)で知ることができる。また、IBMアルマンデン研究所(Almanden Reseach Center)が開発しているバーチャル・キーボードに関してはURL(http://www.almaden.ibm.com/cs/people/zhai/papers/Softkeyboard/UISTCamera.pdf)でPDFデータがダウンロードできる。
