E-mailの略称

省略法はラテン語でAbbreviaturarumという。石碑に文字を刻む場合やパーチメント(羊皮紙)に文章を書く場合に多用された。石の大きさによって書き残せる文章量が限定されたり、1枚のパーチペントが高価であったために考え出された特殊省略法のことで、略称の歴史は古く、それぞれの教会や時代によって省略法が異なる。文章を書く歴史とともに省略法は発展し、最近では世界中でその省略表記法が統一され、略称として認知された。Johnという名前も本来はJohannesが省略され、その後一般化した名前である。E-mailの場合もモニタという限定した空間に、時間節約もかねて多くの略称が有る。ただし、E-Mailをemailと表記した場合、フランス語ではエマイユになり、エナメルということになる。Expaticaは2002年12月17日に、スペイン語の重量を表す古代語「arrobe」から来た 「arobase」の略称で、本来アラビア語の「ar-rub」の1/4という意味から渡来し た言葉として使われていた「@」をフランス政府のGeneral Committee on Terminologyが公式にインターネットの＠マークとして認可したと報道した。それまでのフランスでは電子メールのことを「mel」と表記していた。詳細情報はURL(http://www.expatica.com/france.asp?pad=278,313,&item_id=27474)で知ることができる。「The History of the @ Sign」によれば、タイプライターに「@」が登場したのは1880年頃で、1868年にデザインされたQWERTY keyboardで「@」が標準として採用されたのは1940年頃であったということである。また、モニタ画面が小さい携帯電話では、これまで以上に略語の世界が注目されるようになり、イギリスのOxford University Pressは、あの格調高い英英辞典の最新版「Concise Oxford Dictionary」に携帯電話のSMS(Short Message Service)で多用されるAscii Artや略語のリスト/定義を載せ、販売を開始した。また、ヨーロッパのETSI(European Telecommunications Standards Institute)のポータル・サイトが提供している通信関連の略語事典を公開している。詳細情報はURL(http://portal.etsi.org/edithelp/abbrev/a.asp)で知ることができる。世界の通貨として米国ドルが流通するようになり、「$」という記号が常識的に使われているが、「$」はギリシャの金貨「Solidus」の省略記号である。また、悪名で知られるネオ・ナチの「ネオ(neo)」とは本来「新しい」とか、「後期の」という意味に使われるラテン語の「neophytus」の省略法表記で、「neophytus」は原始キリスト教で新しく洗礼を受けた者、カトリック教では初心者、新参者、修練者の省略語として使われ、デンマークの怒りっぽいバイキングで、キリスト教の洗礼を受けたことで有名なKing Harald Bluetooth(911 1 November, 985または986/デンマーク語ではHarald Blaatand/ハェラル・プロテン)から命名された「Bluetooth」も典型的な「neophytus」で、「ネオ(neo)」であったといえる。「neophytus」は英語の「New」ドイツ語の「neu」の語源でもある。無線LANの技術発達に乗り遅れそうな「Bluetooth」が今後、成功するかどうか？その結果によっては、「Bluetooth」という名前は悪名に利用される可能性も残している。また、携帯電話用英語版省略ショートメッセージ用語辞典「Mobile pubs」もある。詳細情報はURL(http://www.mobilepubs.com/smsdictionary.asp)で知ることができる。また、AT&T Wirelessはtext dictionaryをURL(http://www.attwireless.com/messaging/text/thumbFun/dict.jhtml;dsessionid=DKVMANTULEBAHR1M5W2CFFA)で公開している。
